Daily maintenance, cleaning, and operational services of our residential buildings are handled by a diverse staff of skilled maintenance mechanics, custodians, administrative staff, and managers.

Housing Maintenance

Housing maintenance is responsible for all general facility maintenance, which includes locks, keys, HVAC, plumbing, appliances, paint, electrical, light bulb replacement, and fire safety needs.

Housing Custodial Services

Our housing custodians are responsible for general housekeeping of common areas and restrooms, trash removal, and more.

How to Report or Request Repairs/Service

For Routine Repairs/Service

A routine repair or service is any that would improve or maintain the comfort and convenience of your living environment, such as replacing light bulbs, repairing furniture, replenishing paper towels in a common restroom, and replacing a damaged window screen.

For Emergency Repairs/Service

An emergency repair is warranted in any situation that puts safety at risk and/or causes damage to the facility, such as a fire, flood/leak, heat loss, power failure, lost keys, broken glass, unsecured doors, and overflowing toilets.

  • Call your Housing Facilities office weekdays from 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m at 410-516-7962
  • Call Campus Safety and Security weekday evenings (after 5 p.m.), holidays and weekends
    • Campus Safety and Security: 410-516-4600

What Happens Next?

Routine repairs are generally scheduled in the order received, based on availability of parts and existing workload. Normally, routine repairs take up to three working days. If your repair has not been completed or you have not been informed of a delay after a few days, contact the On-Campus Living Facilities Office, and inquire about the status of your repair request.

Emergency repairs are scheduled the same day. If you do not receive service, contact Facilities or Security promptly, and let them know the repair has not been completed.

Hand Trucks & Moving Bins

Moving out or need to move some large items around? Moving bins can be borrowed from the McCoy and Homewood security desks 24-hours a day. Students should visit the security desk and sign-out the bin in the binder. Unreturned bins will result in a $350 charge.

Decorating

Picture hooks and wire are available, free of charge, from the facilities office located in Wolman 103.

Residents are reminded not to use transparent tape, adhesives, nails, or 3M poster strips on walls. Vandalism charges will be assessed at move-out if wall damage is present as a result of such. Painter’s tape, push pins, and tacks are permitted for hanging on walls.

Bed Lofting

What is Bed Lofting?

When a bed is lofted, it raises the height of the bed and creates more usable floor space beneath it.

Bed lofting is a great option for students living in Wolman, McCoy, Charles Commons, AMR I, AMR II, and AMR III A & B to maximize floor space in their room; bed lofting is not permitted in Rogers House, Bradford, and Homewood.

Beds can be quarter, half, or fully-lofted, except in Charles Commons, where beds can only be quarter or half-lofted.

  • With a quarter-loft, a 2-drawer chest or individual drawer units, placed side-by-side, can fit underneath the bed.
  • With a half-loft, a 3-drawer chest or a set/stack of 2 individual drawers, can be placed underneath the bed.
  • A full-loft can accommodate drawers, a wardrobe, a desk, or a combination of any two underneath the lofted bed.

Terms and Conditions

  • Bed loft requests are accepted only during the first week of each semester.
  • Only approved staff are allowed to loft or de-loft a bed.
  • Non-University provided lofts (e.g. retail-purchased bed risers) are not permitted in any residence.
  • Questions? Contact the Housing Facilities office at 410-516-7962.

Pest Control

Our residential buildings are monitored regularly for pests, and exterminators are on campus multiple days each week for routine inspection and preventative work, as well as to handle specific requests.

If your room requires service, please contact the facilities office at 410-516-7962.

Your cooperation is essential if our residences are to remain pest free. The expectation is that you will observe at least a minimal level of cleanliness. Food should be stored in airtight containers, floors should be vacuumed/cleaned regularly, and dirty glasses and dishes should be washed and stored promptly.

Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning (HVAC)

AMR III A & B are “climate-controlled,” with systems programmed to maintain the rooms at 70° year-round. There are not individual controls in AMR III rooms.

Electronic Thermostat

To Cool

Set the switch on the thermostat to COOL and the fan to AUTO or ON. With the fan switch at AUTO, the fan will cycle on and off, depending on the temperature of the room. With the fan in the ON position the fan will run continuously. Do not set below 70° – the safety switch will turn the unit off.

To Heat

Set the switch on the thermostat to HEAT and the fan to AUTO or ON. With the fan switch at AUTO, the fan will cycle on and off, depending on the temperature of the room. With the fan in the ON position, the fan will run continuously. Do not set above 76° – the safety switch will turn the unit off.

Do not adjust either the heat or a/c by quickly changing the temperature by widely varying amounts. This will short-cycle the unit, causing it to shut down. This will require that a maintenance person reset the unit.

Manual Thermostat

To Cool

Set the switch on the thermostat to COOL and the fan to AUTO or ON. With the fan switch at AUTO, the fan will cycle on and off, depending on the temperature of the room. With the fan in the ON position, the fan will run continuously. Adjust the temperature by pressing the temperature setting button.

To Heat

Set the switch on the thermostat to HEAT and the fan to AUTO or ON. With the fan switch at AUTO, the fan will cycle on and off, depending on the temperature of the room. With the fan in the ON position, the fan will run continuously. Adjust the temperature by pressing the temperature setting button.

Always gradually adjust the thermostat temperature. The current indoor temperature is displayed on the left-hand side of the thermostat.
