Advising

Health professions advisors can help JHU undergraduates and alumni:

  • Explore their decision to pursue a career in the health professions.
  • Prepare academically and non-academically to become a competitive applicant.
  • Understand how to secure medically-related experience, volunteer opportunities, and research.
  • Improve their overall competitiveness and health profession program application.
  • Decide the best time to take the MCAT and to apply to health professions schools.
  • Successfully navigate the application process.
  • Learn about the different health professions – i.e. medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, and a range of other health careers.
  • Prepare for the pursuit of MD-PhD programs with the support of Dr. Terry Rogers, former Director of the Medical Science Training Program (MSTP) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine

Law professions advisor can help JHU undergraduates and alumni:

  • Understand how to approach their undergraduate education and choose an academic major.
  • Prepare academically and non-academically to become a competitive applicant.
  • Seek summer opportunities and/or internships, whether related to the legal field or not, and study abroad.
  • Improve their overall competitiveness and law school application.
  • Decide the best time to take the LSAT, apply, and to navigate the law school application process.

Appointments and small group orientations

  • Student appointments are available Monday through Friday, 10am – 5pm.
  • Sophomores, juniors, seniors and alumni can schedule appointments without condition; freshmen pre-med/health students must first attend a small group general pre-health orientation session.
  • Students can sign up for an appointment through Appointment Plus; confirmations will be sent via e-mail.

Events/Workshops/Experiential Programs

The Office sponsors a calendar of events and information sessions every semester, including:

  • Visits from law schools, medical schools, and other health program representatives (e.g. dental, pharmacy).
  • Semester two-credit medical tutorials with faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
  • Intersession surgical rotations in the areas of anesthesia, cardiac surgery, and general surgery for juniors/seniors
  • Information sessions on applying to medical and dental school.
  • Interview preparation workshops as well as personal statement workshops.
  • Overviews of application service overviews (AMCAS, AACOMAS, AADSAS, LSAC).
  • A Law School Recruitment Fair in the fall.
  • A Health Professions Recruitment Fair in the spring.
  • A mock interview service for applicants to prepare for interviews
  • Summer opportunities information and presentations

Pre-Health, Pre-Health Opportunities, and Pre-Law Newsletters

Bi-Weekly Updates typically include:

  • Upcoming events/information.
  • Clinical experience/volunteer opportunities.
  • Research, medically-related, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Job opportunities; summer opportunities, gap/bridge year opportunities.
  • Interviews with professionals (Law Professions Newsletter) and profession profiles.
  • Upcoming student meetings and program announcements.
