Shemika Brooks, Psy.D., CGP
Group Coordinator, Staff Psychologist; Certified Group Psychotherapist
Pronouns: she/her/hers
I joined the JHU Counseling Center staff in 2017, after receiving the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) Degree in Clinical Psychology from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; but first I completed a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree in Psychology and Philosophy as a double major at Spelman College and then went on to earn a Master of Arts (M.A.) Degree in Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine. I have engaged in clinical work in a variety of college/university counseling centers, as well as community agencies serving children and adolescents, couples, and families. I conceptualize primarily through a psychodynamic lens, and take an integrative approach to work in therapy — incorporating techniques from feminist, mindfulness, family/systems, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. My clinical interests include group psychotherapy; social justice, issues of diversity, and intercultural awareness; work with couples and families; first-generation students and limited income; issues of child abuse, neglect, and permanency; interpersonal trauma and recovery; identity development; and women’s issues.
Outside of work, I enjoy crocheting; spending time with family members and friends (especially babies!); and fellowship with my personal, professional, and spiritual networks.
