Joan Freedman

Director of the Digital Media Center

Joan has been involved with art and technology in various ways for the last 20 years. After obtaining her bachelors of fine arts degree in theatre design/technology and working as a scenery and costume designer she became interested in information design and the use of computer interactivity to make learning fun. Throughout the late ‘80s, early ‘90s she worked with multimedia pioneers in the San Francisco bay area creating interactive museum exhibits, educational software, and games. After obtaining her masters of science degree in educational technology she joined the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Office of Medical Informatics Education where she created technology-based learning resources for students and faculty. As the founding director of the DMC, Joan has collaborated with many students, staff, and faculty to create programming that helps students communicate their ideas using media and technology. In 2016, she completed a masters of science degree in counseling and is now a nationally certified counselor specializing in career and self-exploration.
