Opened in 2002, the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center serves as the main location for fitness opportunities and recreational activities for Homewood and Peabody students. “Despite several major improvements over the past 17 years, the fact of the matter is that we have outgrown our space,” says Bill Harrington, Director of Recreation. “The 2021 expansion will add 25,000 square feet of new and renovated space and will serve as a social and wellness hub for the Hopkins community.”

Some of the major changes include a 3-story addition on the east side of the existing building and a café offering space for students to study or chat with friends. The 3-story addition will provide pedestrians views of three levels of activities while allowing lots of natural light into the exercise spaces and a view of the Bufano Sculpture Garden to exercisers inside. The café will be located off the main lobby for a pre-exercise snack on the way in or a convenient grab-and-go option on the way out.

The expansion will add an additional two programming spaces/studios for organized activities including martial arts. A weight room twice as large as the current space will offer a functional training area and a variety of new equipment like tires for flipping and sleds for pushing. Members can also look forward to brand new, state-of-the-art cardio and resistance training equipment and a fresh look to all existing areas including the climbing wall.
