General Questions

How long is PDOS?

It depends who you are. If you are a regular volunteer, it’s from 10:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. If you are a team leader, it’s from 9:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. If you are a community partner, it’s from 12 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.

Where is PDOS?

Volunteers and team leaders will meet in the gym at the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center.

What if I am not available the entire time? Can I leave in the middle of the service trip?

Registering for and attending PDOS constitutes a commitment that you are available for the entire time of the event. Thus, once you are on site, we cannot arrange separate individual transportation for you to come back to campus. However, if you are unavailable the entire day but would still like to serve and can help set-up for the event or break-down, please email us at

Where are the service sites located and how will we get there?

Transportation (vans and buses) will be provided if sites are not within walking distance. Walking sites are sites less than 3/4 mile away from campus. This is roughly the distance from the Ralph O’Connor Recreation Center to the Waverly Farmers Market (33rd and Barclay St.). All service sites are in Baltimore City.

Volunteer Specific Questions

How are volunteers matched to their service site?

Some participants have special needs that must be accommodated for their safety. Groups are matched according to the number of volunteers they have registered, group’s preference, and group’s special skill set. Individual volunteers will be matched to their preference.

What if I registered and find out I cannot attend?

We are sorry you won’t be able to make it. Please cancel your registration through Eventbrite.

When will I learn what service site I will volunteer at? Why can’t I find out sooner?

We send out volunteer site assignments about a week before the day of service. Unfortunately, we need as much time as possible to solidify the volunteer projects and allow for as many people as possible to register. Thanks for being patient with us!

What if I don’t like the site I’m assigned to?

We are trying to accommodate several hundred volunteers as best as we can. Unfortunately, we cannot reassign you. If there is a site that you would really want to volunteer at badly, just do it! It doesn’t need to be the President’s Day for you to do service!

I’d like to volunteer with my group. What should I do?

  • Under Join a Group”, type in your group name (as listed, e.g. “Student Athletes”).
  • Click Checkout.

If I am serving with my group, will my individual site preference be accounted for?

No, as a group, the group leader gives us a site preference. Once the group is matched, anyone who is affiliated with that group is assigned to that site, regardless of individual preference.

What does it mean to be a Team Leader?

As a team leader, you would be responsible for keeping track of your group, communicating back to the PDOS team in the event of an emergency, and guiding your team through the post-service reflection. Being a team leader is an incredible rewarding experience, and you do not have to have participated in PDOS in the past in order to be a team leader. Team leaders receive a brief training prior to the day of service to help guide them through the day and their responsibilities.

What if I am not affiliated with a group that is already listed on the registration form, but would like to volunteer with a group of friends?

We encourage you to find a participating group and join them. This will ensure that you are assigned with others who are affiliated with that group. However, if this is not possible, feel free to make up a group name for your group of friends or coworkers, fill out the group registration form, and have your friends sign up under that group name. You do not need to pledge 10 members or a member of your group to sign up as a team leader. However, you will not be eligible for group status. For more information please email
