Residential Engagement

The on-campus living team at Johns Hopkins University strives to both build community within our residence halls and equip students with important life skills they can take with them when they leave.

Through our Residential Experience Plan, we have committed to three learning goals that guide all of our initiatives, programs, and events on campus.

  1. Develop lifelong learners
  2. Pursue holistic wellness
  3. Empower community and global citizenship

We integrate these goals into every aspect of residence life, from intentional conversations and education, to community-based programming and interactive displays.

Blue Jay Conversations

Our RAs foster community by engaging in regular, meaningful one-on-one interactions known as Blue Jay Conversations. These informal yet intentional discussions help build strong, personal connections and ensure that every resident feels valued and heard. They are grounded in active listening skills, and open and honest communication.

Departmental Programming

Every month, RAs organize various activities that align with our learning goals and meet the diverse needs of our residents. From board games and athletic events to crafts and informal gatherings, these events enhance community ties and fun. Our professional staff also curate special programs for different student groups, ensuring everyone finds something that resonates with them.

If you have ideas or want to partner with us on a program or event, feel free to reach out to your RA or RD. Connect with us on Instagram for the latest event information and updates.

Roommate/Suitemate Agreements

To foster harmonious and respectful living conditions, JHU facilitates roommate/suitemate agreements. Please contact your RA or RD to access your agreement.

Our roommate/suitemate agreement tool prompts roommates to discuss important living arrangements such as cleanliness, guests, and noise levels, helping to set mutual expectations. If misunderstandings occur, we encourage you to:

  • Communicate directly with your roommate(s) in person.
  • Consult with your RA for further assistance; this could result in both individual and group conversation(s) facilitated by your RA with all those involved.
  • Expect contact from your RD if further support is needed.

These steps are designed to cultivate essential lifelong communication skills and ensure a respectful and enjoyable living environment. Please note that all situations are different, which could result in more direct involvement from your RA or RD.
