FLI Families

Welcome FLI Families! We are excited to connect with you throughout your student’s journey at Hopkins. In this section, you will find important information for FLI Families, including events, programming, and resources.

FLI Family Welcome Reception

For our FLI students and families, starting their undergraduate journey at Hopkins is a significant accomplishment not only as individuals but for their families and communities. All incoming FLI families are invited to join us and celebrate this remarkable milestone while building community and learning about resources and programs specific for FLI students and families from their first experiences with our campus.

FLI Family Mix and Mingle (Family Weekend)

FLI Family Mix and Mingle occurs during the Saturday of JHU’s Family weekend. This event serves as an opportunity for FLI families to engage with FLI practitioners and FLI stakeholders, learn about programs and support based in the Center for Student Success, and build community and connect with other families and students.

FLI Compass Webinar Series

This series provides actionable information – a compass – for families to navigate what’s ahead for their student in their first year at Hopkins in the form of a webinar. This is also a great opportunity for FLI families to meet other FLI families and build community. Topic include finances, research opportunities, supporting students from afar, campus resources, and more.

See Me FLI Grant

A travel grant opportunity to provide access to FLI families to engage in their student’s Hopkins journey in the ways that are most meaningful to them. Students are invited to apply for funding up to $2,000 through this travel grant, to bring their family members to campus for a campus event of their choice. Funding is not guaranteed and specific amounts will be determined on the basis of individual need. The “See Me Fli” Travel Grant is made possible by the generosity and support of David Einolf ’18 and Lu Menghini.

Testimonials

Ronolla Joseph

Family photo of Hopkins student Ronolla Joseph. The four of them are standing in front of a blue curtain smiling.“Thanks to the FLI grant, my family flew in to see me present research at DREAMS. They were so proud of me and were delighted to see how I had grown throughout my first year at Hopkins. They kept commenting on how I had changed so much and how I seemed more grown up now. My parents were very impressed by the Hopkins staff and how supportive everyone is here.

“I really do see you succeeding here,” my dad said. “All they do here is support kids.” As I introduced my parents to various staff members like FLI Director Bryan Capers and JUMP Director Deidre Campbell, they became more comfortable as they got to know the people who constantly work with me.”

The family is smiling in front of a large blue screen.“Having my family come to graduation was a memory I will never forget. They were able to see their dream come true as I walked across the stage. I was very happy to share that moment with them, especially with my siblings who I hope to inspire and set an example for. They had the opportunity to tour campus and I was lucky enough to show them where I have been living, learning, and all the things I’ve done these past four years. I am very grateful to have been picked for this grant and provide my family with the opportunity to attend my graduation ceremony.”

Sandy Wong

She is wearing her graduation robe and cap, smiling with her family on both sides.“The See Me FLI grant has been invaluable in allowing my family to come together to my graduation. I had never envisioned that it would be possible for both my siblings to visit. It was not financially feasible since they would need to call off work and pay for a plane ticket across the country and the world. This also made it extremely difficult to get together as a family. Vacations never overlapped, and COVID made that even harder. In the past five years, we have never been able to be together as a whole, but the FLI grant sparked that reunion and made it possible.

I will forever appreciate this grant that allowed my family to see my graduation and, more importantly, for us to spend some brief time together again. The FLI network has been an invaluable resource during my college career, and the work that it is doing to both alleviate burdens and create opportunities is monumental.”

Taylor Nguyen

They are standing in front of giant blue letters that spell out, "JHU."“The FLI Grant allowed my family to see a pivotal point in their own immigration story and see how their history and lineage ended up unfolding. Graduation is an important symbol of not only my efforts, but the efforts of all the people who came before me. I am truly grateful that the FLI grant allowed me such an important moment.”

They are all smiling by a wall and in front of some white curtains.“I used my FLI Travel Grant to fly my parents out to see me perform during my campus presentation as a new member of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Incorporated. I was so excited to have my family in the audience while accomplishing this great achievement. I had been preparing for this day for months, and the big day was finally here! I am the first in my family to become a member of a Divine 9 organization, so my mom and dad were very excited to come to celebrate with me. My family lives in Chicago so we don’t get to see each other outside of select school breaks.

My parents also had the opportunity to accompany me during my new member initiation luncheon. Everyone was so excited, adn we had so much fun celebrating this new milestone. I am very thankful for the FLI Travel Grant in helping me to create new everlasting memories with my family!
