Orientation, Move In and Family Weekend

Blue Jay Families play an important role in transitioning your student to their new home. The Parent and Family Transition Team is here to provide you with the tools and information you need.


Family Weekend October 14-16, 2022

Family Weekend is an opportunity for families and students to be together in the fall with activities for the whole family to enjoy. Family Weekend for 2022 has been confirmed for October 14-16, 2022. Our Family Weekend Schedule can be found here.

Please note that we ask all visitors to campus to be vaccinated, boosted, and in some cases, wear a mask at indoor events. More information on the current University requirements can be found here: Coronavirus Guidelines

 

Parent & Family Orientation -Blue Jay Families: Hop on Board

Beginning in June 2022, the Parent and Families Transition Team will begin offering online webinars to discuss various topics relative to your student’s preparation for the fall semester. The list of webinars and registration links can be found here on the Blue Jay Families: Hop on Board page. Families will learn about housing and dining options, academic and student support services, campus safety and transportation and student health and wellness. All of the webinars are recorded and will be found on the Blue Jay Families: Hop on Board page once available.

Housing Updates & Reminders

Students living on on-campus housing will sign a housing contract. This housing contract is a license for room accommodations for the period beginning Sunday, August 21, 2022 and continues through the academic year ending Friday, May 12, 2023. All students must vacate their building by 12:00pm Friday, May 12, 2023 (or 24 hours after their last final exam).

For Thanksgiving Break beginning Saturday, November 19, 2022 to Sunday, November 27, 2022 , Spring Break beginning Saturday, March 18, 2023 to Sunday, March 26, 2023, and Winter Break beginning Friday, December 23, 2022 to Monday, January 2, 2023, students have the option to stay on campus. Students must indicate on the break from that they will be staying on campus. Residential dining will be available during break for students on a meal plan.

Move In

During move in, the Parent and Families Transition Team will be onsite to welcome you to the community. While students are collecting keys for their new home away from home, our team will be there to offer support and goodies as you prepare to say good luck! Once your student is all moved in, they will begin their orientation program at 7:30pm on August 20, 2022, outlined below. Please note that the following move-in dates are for students with on-campus housing.

Move in dates for 2022:

  • Pre-O (7-Day) Move-in is on Saturday, August 13 from 9:00am to 12:00pm, no appointments
  • Pre-O (3.5-Day) Move-in is on Tuesday, August 16 from 9:00am to 12:00pm, no appointments
  • International First-Year Students Move-in is on Friday, August 19 from 9:00am to 4:00pm, by appointment
  • Transfer Students Move-in is on Friday, August 19 from 9:00am to 4:00pm, by appointment
  • First-Year Students Move-in is on Saturday, August 20 from 8:00am to 6:00pm, by appointment
  • Returning Students Move-in is on Thursday, August 25 from 8:00am to 6:00pm, by appointment

 

Students will sign up for an appointment (i.e. time slot) on their applicable move-in day. This appointment will be a time slot during which students will pick up their keys and then proceed to their residence hall to move in and unpack. Information to sign up for the appointment will be sent out in early August.

Arrival Time: 9-12pm, no appointments required
Parking: Free in the South Garage (Directions)
Key Pick Up: Shriver Hall
Parent Welcome: Wyman Quad (outside Shriver Hall)

When you arrive to campus, park in the South Garage and accompany your student to the Wyman Quad. While your student is inside Shriver Hall collecting their key and verifying medical forms are complete, the Family Engagement Team will be there to welcome our families to Hopkins. We will serve artisan coffee, offer you a family welcome bag, give you the opportunity to leave a good bye note for your student and take pictures of your family on move in day. Once your student has their key you can drive from the South Garage to the assigned residence hall with your student to unload and unpack. Your student will receive a map and driving directions to their assigned hall. Rolling bins will be available to help you move items into the residence halls.

Arrival by rideshare: Follow signs to rideshare drop off at the front of Mason Hall (Directions). Staff will be on sight to watch your belongings while your student proceeds to Shriver Hall and families to Wyman Quad. Once your student has their key, Blue Jay shuttles will take your student, family and belongings to their assigned residence hall.

August 16th

Parking: Free in the South Garage (Directions)
Key Pick Up: Shriver Hall
Parent Welcome: Wyman Quad (outside Shriver Hall)

Parking for key pick up: Plenty of free parking in the South Garage (Directions)
Parking at Residence Halls: There will be no parking outside of the residence halls, unloading only. You may either park on the street if there is space, or return to the South Garage and park for the duration of your stay.
Key Pick Up: Shriver Hall
Parent Welcome and Resource Fair: Wyman Quad (outside Shriver Hall)
SIM Cards: Will be available at the resource fair from our JHU Technology Store

When you arrive to campus, park in the South Garage and accompany your student to the Wyman Quad. While your student is inside Shriver collecting their key and verifying medical forms are complete, the Family Engagement Team will be on hand welcome our families to Hopkins. We will serve artisan coffee in the morning and sweet treats in the afternoon, offer you a family welcome bag, give you the opportunity to leave a good bye note for your student and take pictures of your family on move in day. Many of our campus offices will be onsite at the Resource Fair to answer questions and provide more information about their services and how they can assist your student. Once your student has their key you can drive from the South Garage to the assigned residence hall with your student to unload and unpack. Your student will receive a map and driving directions to their assigned hall. Rolling bins will be available to help you move items into the residence halls.

Pies after the Good Byes: 7:30pm Wyman Quad

As your student will be joining their required residence hall meeting to kick of New Student Orientation, families are invited to join the Family Engagement Team on the Wyman Quad for a message from Rachelle Hernandez, Vice Provost for Student Affairs and a special treat to take with you after you have said farewell for now to your student.

Athletes

Athletes should check with their coaches about move in details specific to their team.

 

 

 

 

Required New Student Orientation – Hop on Board

New Student Orientation is exclusive for new and transfer students and runs from August 20-August 28. This program will help prepare your student to transition to JHU successfully. Your Blue Jay will learn about academics and student life, meet with an advisor and a First-Year Mentor (current student), and connect with their new community. All New Student Orientations are required unless excused for a varsity sport practice or game by their coach.

Optional Pre-Orientation

Hopkins offers a number of unique Pre-Orientation programs for students. The details of the programs and the dates can be found on our Pre-Orientation page. The Parent and Family Transition Team will be onsite when you move your student in early for these programs to Welcome you to Hopkins.

Billing Period Dates

The first semester billing period begin Tuesday, August 20, 2022 and ends Saturday, December 31, 2022. The second billing period begins Sunday, January 1, 2023 and ends on Thursday, May 11, 2023.
