Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still apply for funding if I haven’t been accepted to my internship yet?

Yes. You can propose the activities you would be doing and how you would be spending the stipend. However, you will not receive your stipend without confirming your internship or research project by the acceptance deadline in May.

Is there a maximum number of summer opportunities I can apply for?

No, there is no maximum. However, the purpose of this resource is to provide as much opportunity for all scholars. Having completed an experience already is included in the selection rubric. We would encourage all Baltimore Scholars to also consider options provided through Life Design at Homewood, the offices of undergraduate research, and the Center for Social Concern.

What happens if my summer plans change?

Plans change all the time, and they are to be expected. If your plans change prior to starting or during your summer experience, please contact the program staff immediately to discuss your options. If during your internship, things change, please also connect with the program staff to discuss.

My application was accepted, when can I expect to receive the grant?

When you have been awarded a summer stipend, you can expect payment to occur in June. In some cases, your award may be split into payments that occur in June and August.

Tips for a Competitive Application

  • Make sure your proposal is very detailed. Be specific about your estimated costs/budget and how financial assistance will help you achieve your goal. Also, be sure to state the importance of your summer experience (class, internship, research, etc) and what role it plays in your future academic/career goals.
  • Don’t forget to include an email from your internship/research sponsor verifying that you are participating in an internship/research with that organization.
  • Arrive to your interview on time and prepared. Dress professionally and don’t forget to smile. Students who move on to interviews are required to meet with a Life Design Educator for a mock interview. Use this time wisely! Use feedback to prepare for your real interview.
  • Double-check to make sure your application is completed in full and contains any additional required items.
