Cija Jefferson, Academic Advisor/Success Coach in WSE. Learn more about her advising philosophy: “In my role as your Academic Advisor/Success Coach I’m in partnership with you from your arrival on campus through graduation. My personal advising philosophy and practice is grounded in accessibility, inclusion, and active collaboration. I’m available to you, and encourage your empowerment by actively listening, and recognizing your individual lived experiences. One of the biggest gifts I received as an undergraduate was my sociology professor coaxing me to give voice to my educational desires. Up until that point I had looked at education as solely taking tests and writing papers. By asking questions she helped me to identify what I wanted/needed and fostered an environment of trust not only in her, but in myself. This moment was the beginning of understanding that while college is about doing the work, it is also a safe space to expand and grow. It is a place to explore not only your educational and professional goals, but your desires for your life. How do you want to show up in the world? What do you want your impact to be? What is success to you? These are questions I too ask myself as I move through the world. Beginning your college journey can be both exciting and overwhelming, and it can be difficult to determine who to turn to when you’re receiving so much information, but please know I’m a trusted resource. If you don’t know who to ask, come to me first. I may not always know the answer, but I can definitely connect you to someone who does. I look forward to working with you.” - Cija Jefferson #JHUSCAA #blueprintsforsuccess #successfuljays #bluejaysblueprintforsuccess #buildingsuccessfulbluejays

Erica Trainor, Academic Advisor/Success Coach in WSE. Learn more about her advising philosophy: “As a first-generation Latina, I understand the emotions and nuances that can come with navigating higher education. My personal experiences have fueled my passion for education and propelled me to advocate for students like me. To break barriers and bridge the gap for underrepresented groups, it is important to work within a strengths-based and holistic framework. Being an Academic Advisor/Success Coach for FLI students enables me to meet students where they are, delve deeper into their strengths and identity, provide academic and socio-emotional support, and help them build the confidence and skills needed for success. Being multiculturally competent and challenging one’s biases are also necessary to best support students from all backgrounds and experiences. In addition, using a solution-focused model allows me to problem-solve with students and focus on SMART goals.” - Erica Trainor #JHUSCAA #blueprintsforsuccess #successfuljays #bluejaysblueprintforsuccess #buildingsuccessfulbluejays

Malissa Rivera, Academic Advisor/Success Coach in WSE. Learn more about her advising philosophy: “All students have the ability to grow through the unique challenges college presents with the right amount of guidance. Imposter syndrome, insecurities, and overall feelings of inadequacy can cause students to believe they cannot handle these challenges. As an Academic Advisor/Success Coach, I follow the philosophy of “challenge and support.” It is my responsibility to meet students where they are and encourage them to go further. I believe in setting goals and holding students accountable in achieving those goals. I am committed to equity and social justice and consider the effects of historical oppression on people and society. Furthermore, I operate through a multicultural lens, considering the different factors that impact a student’s experience such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, income status, disability status, and sexual orientation. I create a safe and brave space so students can be their authentic selves, while challenging their beliefs and behaviors that hold them back from success. I believe each student has endless talent and it is my responsibility to help them see their fullest potential!” - Malissa Rivera #JHUSCAA #blueprintsforsuccess #successfuljays #bluejaysblueprintforsuccess #buildingsuccessfulbluejays

Karla Chicas, Academic Advisor/Success Coach in KSAS. Learn more about her advising philosophy: “As an Academic Advisor/Success Coach, I believe that academic and financial resources will help students survive their undergraduate experience, but supporting students to foster a sense of belonging will allow them to thrive at Hopkins and beyond. As students transition into the world of Higher Education, I seek to learn and understand their own worlds and backgrounds first, because they matter. This helps provide meaningful insight that can increase students' sense of comfort and ability to operate in diverse settings and equip them to take ownership of their own college experience. In my role, I aim to be someone who can guide students, but also challenge them to examine their own ideas and pursuits, while also offering a safe and encouraging environment for them to do so. To me, advising and success coaching are not about changing the world (I’m sure our students will do that!), they’re about helping students navigate their own understanding of it.” - Karla Chicas #JHUSCAA #blueprintsforsuccess #successfuljays #bluejaysblueprintforsuccess #buildingsuccessfulbluejays

Dan Ferrara, Associate Director, Success Coaching Program in Academic Advising, WSE. Learn more about his advising philosophy: "While you are ultimately the capable creator of your path, navigating the undergraduate experience can be difficult. No one goes it alone at JHU; I am in this with you, as are the dedicated staff, faculty, students and alumni. Engaging with resources and establishing academic and social connections empowers us to improve our individual experiences, and to share those experiences with others positively impacts the larger community. I believe that we all thrive when we combine our individual and collective strengths to solve problems, and that collaboration enables continued growth and unexpected discovery. I believe in the power of storytelling as an effective means of defining our authentic selves, and in the examination of where we’ve been, where we are at present, and where we want to go. Lastly, I believe in being kind - not just to others, but to ourselves - as we face the challenges in our daily lives." - Dan Ferrara . . . #JHUSCAA #blueprintsforsuccess #successfuljays #bluejaysblueprintforsuccess #buildingsuccessfulbluejays

Dr. William Darryl Allen, Academic Advisor/Success Coach in KSAS. Learn more about his advising philosophy: "Student academic success is at the center of my belief. When there is collaboration between students and their Success Coach, a positive interactive relationship will develop with student success at the center. I ask positive questions to enhance, motivate, and show interest, while students should ask questions about their academic goals to increase their academic success. I will do my best to answer the students' questions. If I do not have the answer to their questions, I will endeavor to find the answer or put them in contact with someone who can best answer the question. When all are involved and working towards a common goal, no matter their background or income, educational success will be the outcome. Carlos Avent, Academic Advisor/Success Coach in KSAS. Learn more about his advising philosophy: "The purpose of advising, as I see it, is to be a trusted resource with experience in success, and experience in turning failures into learning opportunities that lead to success. When I advise students, I aspire to see them grow, learn, explore, and then pass the torch in their own way. The thing I value most about working with students is establishing rapport and that feeling of being an intricate part of their academic journey. I try to always be mindful of my students' strengths and areas of challenge. This is critical for helping students develop or improve their self-awareness and self-confidence while they are pushing forward to achieve academic, professional, and personal goals. I develop myself professionally by always being in tune with what impacts students' success in the realm of higher education. Keeping up with thought leaders and policy changes, and educational opportunities for me to be a better advisor, are always on my radar of personal development.
