Kathleen M. Barry
Associate Director, Scholars & Fellows Programs
Kathleen Barry has been a fellowships advisor at Johns Hopkins since July 2018, helping students apply for Fulbright grants, Goldwater Scholarships, and dozens of other nationally competitive fellowships, scholarships, and grants. After many years as an historian, she relishes the opportunity to work with Hopkins students across disciplines and divisions and learn about their diverse research agendas, academic interests, and activities, while helping them sharpen their self-advocacy skills and reflective practices.
Prior to arriving at Hopkins, Kathleen taught US history at New York University while earning her doctorate and at the University of Cambridge, where she was the Mellon Research Fellow in American History and a fellow of Jesus College for three years. After her postdoctoral fellowship in Cambridge, she remained overseas, living in England and Spain for a total of 11 years. She is the author of Femininity in Flight: A History of Flight Attendants (Duke University Press, 2007). Along with her time in academia, Kathleen has also worked in public history institutions. She served on the staff of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, developing publications and programs, and was the Executive Director of the Historical Society of Baltimore County. She continues to practice her history teaching skills each spring as a volunteer judge for National History Day contests at the local, state, and national level, and encourages others with a history background to join in the fun of supporting our youngest historians.
She holds a BA in history magna cum laude from Harvard University and a PhD in US history from New York University.
