John Milstead

Assistant Director, Scholars & Fellows Programs

John Milstead has been supporting applicants seeking external fellowships and scholarships since 2018. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins University, he worked as a fellowship advisor at Iowa State University and Washington University in St. Louis. He is passionate about helping JHU students as they seek opportunities with the Fulbright US Student Program, Goldwater Scholarship, Rhodes Scholarship, and similar nationally competitive grants and fellowships.

John developed an interest in fellowship advising while applying for funding as a graduate student at Michigan State University. He is also a historian with research focusing on race, class, and citizenship in nineteenth century Oaxaca, Mexico. In fact, he completed his dissertation research with generous funding from a Fulbright García-Robles Research Scholarship. Thus, he understands the application process from the perspective of both an advisor and applicant. In his free time John likes to cook delicious meals, check out estate sales, and explore the city.
