Carlos Avent
Senior Academic Advisor/Success Coach, KSAS
Carlos Avent believes that higher education stands firmly on the words of W.E.B. DuBois. As he said, “Education must not simply teach work, it must teach life.” These words fuel the passion behind Carlos’ role as an Academic Advisor & Success Coach in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
Carlos is a native of Baltimore, and he is an alum of The Baltimore City College and Morgan State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Carlos then continued his education at Walden University and earned a Master of Science in Higher Education and professional certificates in Instructional Design. Carlos’ professional experiences in higher education includes serving as a first-year mentor for the Collegebound Foundation, an alumni mentor for first-year students for the Morgan State University Alumni Association, and several roles for advising and coaching for the Baltimore-based higher education organization, Laureate Education, Inc.
These roles included serving as an academic advisor to both traditional and adult learners, as a retention strategist that analyzed at-risk student population data and recommend success strategies, and lastly, developing and serving as the manager of a success coaching program to support students in their first year as an undergraduate or graduate online learner. In 2019, Carlos was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success.
When not working with the enthusiastic students at Johns Hopkins University, Carlos enjoys sports (particularly his Baltimore Ravens), a game of chess, word games, and writing.
