Karla Chicas
Academic Advisor/Success Coach, KSAS
As a first-generation graduate, Karla obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Salisbury University and a Master of Arts in Higher Education from Montclair State University. During her time in undergrad, she discovered a passion for supporting college students through holistic practices and that passion deepened as a graduate student when she had the opportunity to collaborate with the Office of Hispanic Serving Initiatives at Montclair State University. This partnership addressed the need for mentorship among the Hispanic/Latinx student population by creating and implementing the Montclair State University Hispanic/Latinx Alumni Network. Karla then returned to her alma mater where she served as an Area Director at Salisbury University, where she oversaw first-year residential communities and formed connections with first-generation and low-income students. Her journey in Higher Education has led her to different places, but ultimately with a common goal to better the landscape of the learning environment by using equitable practices through the holistic development of students.
Growing up in Baltimore has naturally made Karla a Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan, but when it comes to basketball…go Warriors! During her free time, Karla loves to read and write. Her friends call her “the question queen,” so if you see her question book nearby, don’t be surprised.
