Lighting of the Quads 2023 – Call for submissions!
The DMC and JHU Makerspace are collaborating on a new light installation for this year’s Lighting of the Quads and are seeking your designs around the theme of “Discovery and Exploration” (whatever that means to you!)
We’ll turn your black and white drawing into a laser-cut panel, backlit by colorful LEDs in a big wall created by the Hopkins community.
Submit here by November 27 to be included – deadline extended!
Design Guidelines:
You will be submitting an image of the drawing you created as well as a short description of what it represents to this submission form: https://forms.office.com/r/96MsvBMGxg
- You can create your design with any medium, physical or digital, as long as you can turn it into an image file for upload. Submit a PNG, JPEG, or SVG file.
- Designs will be cut into a square approximately 10 inches by 10 inches. We may crop non-square designs to fit.
- No text
- ONLY black and white: white is the material, and black shapes are cutouts (see below about how to make cutouts)
- Thick, firm lines: your panel will be illuminated and seen from a distance. Be bold and avoid thin lines – lines closer together than 1/16” will “bleed” together on the panel.
Cutouts:
Your black lines will be cut out, so make sure the lines have some breaks, like a stencil. If you fully enclose a shape, it will be fully cut out of the material!
Example: If you draw a full circle, both the black line and all the white area inside will be cut out. If that isn’t what you want, draw an almost-complete circle, but don’t close it fully, so the inside will remain when the design is cut out.
