This event served as the official kickoff for Research Remix – an interdisciplinary program organized by the DMC and funded by an Arts Innovation grant from JHU. Student and faculty researchers from JHU and JHMI submitted abstracts and research details to share with local artists and designers in and around Baltimore. Artists will be producing new creative work inspired by or in collaboration with the participating researchers.
Participants were in attendance and displayed excerpts from their research, using this event to choose a partner for collaboration.
The event was open to the public, and also included a presentation by JHMI faculty and artist Tim Phelps about his work and newly released two-volume book series Nature Mandalas: Life Circles of Biodiversity and Conservancy.
There was also an optional hands-on workshop where Phelps guided participants in making their own mandalas using scientific imagery. Attendees were welcome to bring journals, magazines, homework and otherimagery of their choice to collage with the goal of “remixing” traditional academic forms.
