Safety & Security

Security Patrol Zone

Commercial properties around the Homewood Campus have the benefit of being within our PDF Document: JHU security patrol zone, which offers a strong security presence with security vehicle rotations throughout the day and night. Buildings along North Charles and St. Paul streets have added security support from officers positioned at regular intervals as well as on-foot and bike patrols.

Transportation, Security Escorts, and the Live Safe App

Campus Safety and Security and Transportation Services provide many options for students traveling between campus and home. The Blue Jay Shuttle operates nightly with stops at various local off-campus residence buildings, local retailers and the Homewood campus. From 11:30 p.m. to 3 a.m., students can choose the Brody Shuttle service departing the Brody Learning Commons on the half hour, or Night Ride, which offers on-demand, curb-to-curb vans and Lyft rides to and from locations within the Blue Jay Shuttle service area beginning at 5:30 p.m.

If a student feels unsafe or ill, they can receive a security escort from Campus Safety and Security by calling 410-516-4600. In addition, Campus Safety and Security sponsors the LiveSafe App, which is a tool that allows users a direct line to communicate with security. Users can share information easily, receive alerts, request a security escort, and share their location with friends and family.

Security Audit

Campus Safety and Security also provides home inspections for students living in non-commercial buildings. This service is free of charge and includes:

  • Inspection of shrubbery to reduce opportunities for concealment
  • Assessment of exterior lighting
  • Inspection of windows, doors, and locks
  • Checks of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors

For more information or to request an inspection, visit Campus Safety & Security Home Inspections. After a request has been submitted, a staff member will be in contact within 1–2 business days to get the process started. After the inspection, security will provide a written copy of the report and the Off-Campus Housing office is available to advise on how to best work with the landlord to correct any issues.
