Sam Broomell
Director, Wind Ensemble
From the concert hall to the church sanctuary, conductor, performer, and educator Sam Broomell thrives in a dynamic environment. Sam draws his early artistic inspiration from listening to music with his father in the car, where he would listen to the same CD’s of U2 and Keane on repeat for months at a time. Over time, he learned to refine his listening to pick up on a new element with each repetition. This experience formed one of Sam’s artistic ideals: An artist can never fully know a skill well enough that it cannot be improved.
Sam brings interactivity and a desire to execute deliberately to each ensemble under his baton. He first made his concert hall debut with the Franklin & Marshall College Wind Ensemble in 2017, where he served as an Assistant Conductor of both the Wind Ensemble and Orchestra at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Sam has gratefully been named as Conductor of the Johns Hopkins University Wind Ensemble for the 2022-2023 academic year. In 2022, Sam had the honor of being a finalist for a Band Officer and Conductor position with The United States Army Band, with the immense privilege of conducting The United States Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus.
A versatile musician, Sam is just as comfortable playing in a rock band as he is on the podium. He draws inspiration from his background in Gospel, Jazz, Musical Theater, and Christian Rock music, allowing him to flourish in many musical environments. Sam is a freelance pianist and saxophonist, playing for weddings and special events in the Baltimore, Maryland area. He maintains an active private lesson studio, teaching piano, guitar, and woodwind instruments at The International School of Music in Bethesda, MD. Sam also serves as the Lead Musician at Faith Christian Fellowship Church in Baltimore.
Sam is trusted by others to deliver quality musical experiences that excite. From 2020-2021, he was on the music faculty at Linville Hill Christian School, where he taught classroom music and directed several ensembles. He has served in the public schools, both as a jazz band director at Lampeter-Strasburg High School and staff arranger at Solanco High School. From 2020-2022, he served as the Music Director at Faith Church in Quarryville, PA, overseeing the worship ensembles and audio-visual technology, alongside approximately 40 volunteers.
Sam has studied conducting with Harlan Parker and Brian Norcross. He has also worked with Jerry Junkin, Kevin Sedatole, Richard Floyd, Jeffrey Grogran, James Smart, Cynthia Johnston Turner, and John Lynch at conducting workshops across the United States. He is currently a Doctor of Music Arts (DMA) Candidate in Wind Conducting at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Sam also received a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from the Peabody Institute. Before coming to Peabody, Sam earned a dual degree, Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance and Business Administration, with a concentration in Conducting and Saxophone.
