HOPOUT: Who’s Cooking Tonight?

On Thursday, March 30, students gathered in the Charles Commons kitchen to participate in “Who’s Cooking Tonight?”, an all-new cooking workshop led by master chef Ian Magowen, assistant director of Dining Programs at Johns Hopkins University. The workshop was held as part of the “HOPOut” series, a collaboration between the Second-Year Experience program and the Off-Campus Housing Office designed to provide guidance and support to second-year Blue Jays as they transition to living off-campus. Over the course of the evening, students learned how to create dishes of exquisite quality with a hint of home and simplicity, resulting in a meal that could easily have been served in a restaurant in Little Italy.
- Cutting the ingredients.
- Tossing the tomatoes with the onions.
- Adding the last bits including the basil.
- Mixing it all together.
- Seasoning the chicken.
- Adding salt.
- Grilling the chicken in the sauce.
- The end product.
At the end of the evening, students were presented with a variety of tips on healthy eating and cooking at home. When chef Magowen revealed that the cost of the entire meal had boiled down to only $5.05, the students’ jaws dropped. Now, with this recipe and eating guidelines in hand, the students were fully equipped to make their own world-class cuisines at home.
