B’More Community Bound

B’More Community Bound pre-orientation program is an immersive, service-learning, and leadership development experience for incoming First-Year JHU students. First-Years gain a deeper understanding of social justice issues and civic engagement as they relate to Baltimore City.

During this weeklong program, students will learn more about the social justice issues affecting Baltimore through a combination of service projects, trips to local community organizations, fun cultural events, and leadership development activities. You’ll leave the week with a deeper appreciation for our city and with a new group of friends who share your passion for civic engagement and volunteering.

During B’More Community Bound, students participate in a series of educational workshops, direct service projects with community partners, reflection sessions, and leadership development activities.

Get to Know B’More Community Bound Student Leaders

HopkinsCorps has five student leaders who play an integral role during our pre-orientation program! Get to know them below.

Rosie Chen

I am a rising sophomore studying Biophysics and History of Science, Medicince, and Technology. I have an interest in researching enzymatic chemistry as well as community advocacy. In the future, I hope to conduct community-engaged basic science research. Outside of academics, I enjoy firespinning and metalworking.

I’m most excited to share Baltimore’s strong sense of community and how Hopkins students can engage with Baltimore! From community fridges to community gardens, Baltimoreans band together to make their neighborhoods home.

Estella Cui

Hi everyone! My name is Estella and I’m from just outside of Boston. At Hopkins, I am a rising sophomore majoring in Behavioral Biology and German. Outside of classes, I love to spend my time in the pool or at the gym, curled up in bed with a cup of tea and a book, and exploring new spots in Baltimore!
I am super excited to share as many of the cool spots I’ve found in Baltimore as I can! It’s not hard for Hopkins to become a bubble, but it’s also important to see the city outside of it!

MRuomu Dong(Melly)

Hi! I’m Melly, a psychology major ’28. I love cooking, art, animals and everything related to clinical psychology. Fun fact: I have a farm back home(Inner Mongolia) with hundreds of sheep and cows.

I’m most excited about meeting great people and Getting great food.

Kathryn Prather

Hello all! I am a rising sophomore double majoring in Materials Science and Engineering and Economics. I am originally from Wheeling, West Virginia, but I love living in Baltimore now as well! I play cello and love creating art in my free time (whether it be music or a terrible crayon doodle). I enjoy playing soccer and other sports, and I like exploring new places and trying new food!

I can’t wait to meet new students and help them adjust to life at Hopkins! I participated in BCB as a freshman, and I want to make the transition to Baltimore and college easier for the next class as well.

Yvette Shu

Hi my name is Yvette, and I’m a rising junior majoring in political science and international studies! I’m passionate about studying, understanding, and fighting against inequality of all forms. I love being at Hopkins because of its strong research focus and its emphasis on exploring the communities around us. I’m a part of the Model UN Team, Blue Key Society, Lambda Rho sorority, and the photography team on campus! In my spare time, I love doing portrait photography, traveling with friends, and debating topics I have no knowledge in.
I am super excited to lead BCB this year and welcome a new cohort of incoming freshmen to Baltimore! I am most excited about introducing students to some of the best Baltimore and Hopkins has to offer and to teach them about the rich history of the city.
