B’More Community Bound
Applications to become a student leader for next year’s pre-orientation program will open January 22, 2024. B’More Community Bound for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year will occur August 16th-19th. Check back here soon.
B’More Community Bound pre-orientation program is an immersive, service-learning, and leadership development experience for incoming First-Year JHU students. First-Years gain a deeper understanding of social justice issues and civic engagement as they relate to Baltimore City.
During this weeklong program, students will learn more about the social justice issues affecting Baltimore through a combination of service projects, trips to local community organizations, fun cultural events, and leadership development activities. You’ll leave the week with a deeper appreciation for our city and with a new group of friends who share your passion for civic engagement and volunteering.
During B’More Community Bound, students participate in a series of educational workshops, direct service projects with community partners, reflection sessions, and leadership development activities.

Get to Know B’More Community Bound Student Leaders
HopkinsCorps has five student leaders who play an integral role during our pre-orientation program! Get to know them below.
Dua Hussain
Hi! My name is Dua Hussain and I’m studying Pre-Health, Anthropology, Medicine, Science, and the Humanities. I also minor in Psychology. But I have more hobbies than majors (writing, reading, crochet, painting, etc.)! I’m really passionate about the stuff I care about, like social justice, medical inequity, etc.
I’m most excited about meeting the first-years and helping them discover their favorite parts of Baltimore, but also providing them the toolkit to keep exploring far after the end of B’More Community Bound.
Hadeed Habib
Hi! My name’s Hadeed and I’m a rising junior majoring in Sociology and Art History on the Pre-law track. I’m originally from Peshawar, Pakistan but now live in San Diego, CA! Some of the things I like doing in my free time are dancing, sketching, cooking, and reading!
I’m most excited to meet the incoming freshman and provide them with resources and experiences that I found helpful in my time at Hopkins! I also really look forward to exploring the wide array of culture in Baltimore.
Kya Nicholson
I am a junior from Queens, New York. I am pursuing my bachelor’s in Public Health and Africana Studies on a Pre-med track. At Hopkins, I’m involved in extracurriculars ranging from a natural hair club – Knotty by Nature, to Hopkin’s first songwriting club that she co-founded Rhythm and Bluejays. I’m heavily interested in community/family health, specifically health disparities in different populations such as immigrants and marginalized communities. I enjoy exploring and experiencing Baltimore for all it has to offer.
I am excited to see what’s new in store for B’More Community Bound. I am really excited to take the incoming students to a spot of my choice!
Ava Payton
I’m a rising sophomore majoring in Behavioral Biology and Psychology. I’m very passionate about community service and am the new civic engagement chair for Female Leaders of Color. I participated in B’More Community Bound last year and can’t wait to be a leader for it this year!
I’m most excited to help the incoming students learn to love the Baltimore community and have a great experience like I did!
Gerardo Fontes
My name is Gerardo Fontes, I’m a junior majoring in International Studies, Political Science, and History with a minor in Economics. I’m originally from Caracas, Venezuela but currently live in Fort Lauderdale, FL. On campus, I’m the executive director for the Foreign Affairs Symposium and a student coordinator at the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Outside of school, I enjoy watching all kinds of sports from soccer to Formula 1, as well as exploring Baltimore and trying new foods.
Being able to lead B’More Community Bound this year, I’m most excited about being able to explore and learn about Baltimore and Hopkins through a unique perspective that a lot of other Hopkin’s student aren’t able to get.
