EY2026 Committee Process Homepage

Welcome to the Office of Pre-Professional Programs and Advising Med School Entry Year 2026 Homepage

This page will be used as your resource guide throughout the application cycle. Below, throughout the toggles and tabs, you can find important documents to help you navigate the process, fill out your primary applications, prepare for secondaries and interviews, and much more.

Platforms and Terms

As a Johns Hopkins University pre-health applicant, you should familiarize yourself with these platforms and terms:

  • Health Professions Application (HPA): The HPA is an internal application (not shared with medical or dental schools) that is required by Pre-Professional Advising if you wish to receive a Committee Letter from our office. The HPA has two important functions:
    • Information from the HPA is used to write your Committee Letter
    • Completing the HPA will help you prepare your future medical/dental school application (the HPA “Work and Activities” section is similar to the AMCAS “Work and Activities” section).
    • Since the HPA contributes significantly to your professional school application, the time, energy, and thought put into the HPA will pay off immensely.
  • Survey Monkey Apply (SMA): The HPA is administered through Survey Monkey Apply. You will receive the HPA/SMA link in your emails on launch day. SMA will also hold your letters of recommendations, transcripts, and other relevant items required to write your committee letter
  • Committee Letter: The Johns Hopkins University Committee Letter formally introduces you–the applicant– to medical/dental schools.
    • All current students and alumni of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering who meet our Committee Letter Eligibility Requirements and Alumni Policy, as well as stated deadlines, will receive a Committee Letter from Johns Hopkins University.
    • During the summer, when your Committee Letter is complete, Pre-Professional Advising uploads your Committee Letter + your individual letters of recommendation to the primary application services (AMCAS, AACOMAS, AADSAS, TMDSAS) of your choosing.

Deadlines

By March 30, 2025, 11:59 PM EST: FIRST-TIME APPLICANTS must:

  • Complete and submit the HPA

Your final list of LoRs does not need to be submitted, nor do your individual letters need to be received prior to the submission of your HPA (March 30th for first-time applicants, May 30th for reapplicants). Similarly, your individual letters of recommendation do not need to be submitted by your writers to SMA prior to submitting your primary application(s) (AMCAS/AACOMAS/AADSAS/TMDSAS/etc…).

**Applicants that have pending spring semester grades should submit their unofficial transcript(s) from undergraduate/graduate schools attended by May 30, 2025, 11:59 pm EST

By May 30, 2025, 11:59 PM EDT: REAPPLICANTS must:

  • Complete and submit the HPA

Your final list of LoRs does not need to be submitted, nor do your individual letters need to be received prior to the submission of your HPA (March 30th for first-time applicants, May 30th for reapplicants). Similarly, your individual letters of recommendation do not need to be submitted by your writers to SMA prior to submitting your primary application(s) (AMCAS/AACOMAS/AADSAS/TMDSAS/etc…).

By June 30 2025, 11:59 PM EST: ALL APPLICANTS must

    • Submit unverified applications to SMA

The Pre-Professional Office strongly suggests asking writers to submit letters by the middle to end of June, capitalizing on the opportunity for earlier submission of your letters and materials. This proactive approach can positively impact your overall application process. However, all recommendations and additional materials (i.e., unofficial transcripts) MUST be submitted by July 30th at 11:59 PM ET. No letters submitted after this date will be accepted for the 2025-2026 application cycle.

By July 30, 2025, 11:59 PM EST: ALL APPLICANTS must:

  • Have all final letters of recommendation submitted to the “Pre-Professional HPA Letter of Recommendation & Materials” section**
  • Submit fee assistance documents to SMA, if applicable ***
  • Upload unofficial transcript(s) from undergraduate/graduate schools attended

If you received a CL in EY23, EY24, or EY25, and would like to use individual letters from a previous cycle, please do the following:

Go to your SMA account and put the following information into your letter of Rec Request:

  1. First Name: PreProfessional
  2. Last Name: Advising
  3. Contact: [email protected]
  4. Body of Message: “Please upload letters from my letter for *insert specific evaluators names* (i.e. Dr. Seuss, Big Bird, etc..).” Include ALL letters you are requesting in the body of this section.

**When requesting a committee letter (CL) from Pre-Prof, the individual letters of recommendation required to supplement the committee letter will be verified. Students whose letters don’t meet the 2 academic and 1 non-academic letter requirements will be notified either via SMA or email.

***If you have received the AAMC fee waiver (Fee Assistance Program- FAP), you are eligible to receive a reimbursement for your HPA fee through Pre-Professional.

Please do the following to receive your reimbursement:

  1. Upload your FAP confirmation as proof of receiving the AAMC waiver here in ‘additional documents’
  2. Email Pre-Prof at [email protected] and include the following:
    • Put in the subject line: First Name & Last Name HPA Reimbursement
    • Provide the name on the card you used to pay your HPA fee so we can process reimbursement. We need the name on the card used because the $85 fee will be returned to the card that was used to submit the payment.

Please Note: Health professions schools prefer confidential letters of evaluation/recommendation, i.e., those written with the knowledge that the applicant will not have access to the letters or their content, Pre-Prof will not implicitly or explicitly inform applicants about the content or strength of a letter.

Applicants who miss any of the above deadlines will not be eligible to receive a Committee Letter this cycle. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Students who would like to submit a formal request for policy exemption can access that here: PDF Document: Policy Waiver Request Form

Letters of Recommendation

  • PDF Document: SMA Letter of Rec Process Resource
  • Guidelines for Letter Writers
  • Here are a few things to note concerning your Letters of Recommendation (LoR):
    • Your final list of LoRs does not need to be submitted, nor do your individual letters need to be received prior to the submission of your HPA (March 30th for first-time applicants, May 30th for reapplicants). Similarly, your individual letters of recommendation do not need to be submitted by your writers to SMA prior to submitting your primary application(s) (AMCAS/AACOMAS/AADSAS/TMDSAS/etc…).
    • Some medical schools indicate you should submit a specific number of recommendation letters. If you are using the JHU Committee Letter (CL), you do not have to worry about those requirements as they are directed to applicants from undergraduate institutions that do not provide Committee Letters. Medical schools will instead accept the JHU CL packet, which includes your CL plus your individual letters of rec submitted to SMA in lieu of their individual letter requirements. Please follow our letter of recommendation requirements outlined on SMA and Guide 2.
    • The Pre-Professional Office strongly suggests asking writers to submit letters by the middle to end of June, capitalizing on the opportunity for earlier submission of your letters and materials. This proactive approach can positively impact your overall application process. However, all recommendations and additional materials (i.e., unofficial transcripts) MUST be submitted by July 30th at 11:59 PM ET. No letters submitted after this date will be accepted for the 2025-2026 application cycle.
    • If you received a CL or LORs submitted on your behalf in EY23, EY24, or EY25, and would like to use individual letters from a previous cycle, please do the following:
      1. Go to your SMA account and put the following information into your letter of Rec Request:
      2. First Name: PreProfessional
      3. Last Name: Advising
      4. Contact: [email protected]
      5. Body of Message: “Please upload letters from my letter for *insert specific evaluators names* (i.e. Dr. Seuss, Big Bird, etc..).” Include ALL letters you are requesting in the body of this section.

Due to the mechanisms of the application and differing expectations of veterinary schools, Pre-Prof will NOT provide CLs for pre-vet students. Please note that not having a committee letter will not negatively impact your admissions process in any way. Not providing a CL but having applicants submit individual letters of recommendation will reduce application challenges for pre-vet applicants and prevent pre-vet applicants from having issues meeting requirements for all vet schools.
